What is Fine Edition Printing?

You will see on our website that we often refer to the idea of

Fine Edition Printing over and over. The reason is the artists and photographers we are working with typically are producing edition work and we guarantee the edition will be produced with the same standards whether it is print #1 or print #50. In this economy we very rarely have a client that will produce the full edition in one production run. This is the reason we create both AP (artist proofs) & PP (printers proofs) before we start the edition. These proofs are used by both the artist & in-house to ensure the quality matches from one print to the next. The substrates we work with are not substrates that we anticipate disappearing to ensure we can complete and edition. In the event that we hear a paper is being discontinued we contact our artist using that particular paper to see if the wish to full-fill the edition or simply close the edition at the current print. Our service is meant to allow the artist to print as sales or exhibitions require a print. All files are backed up on one of our (3) 24 Terrabyte RAID 5 servers with redundant back-up to ensure your files are ready for print when you demand. For an extra fee of $2 per print ordered, we can also keep track of your running edition numbers for you in-house. This information will also be backed up to our RAID server as well. A few of our artist are too busy creating new work or trying to sell work to concentrate on the nitty-gritty business aspect of creating edition artwork.

Past Exhibitions

Booksmart Studio housed two galleries from 2007-2012. This is an archive of some of the exhibits we showed in either Rochester Pin-Up Gallery or Gallery Kunstler. The Imaging Panels is a public art gallery on Goodman Street in Rochester, NY. Booksmart Studio is the sponsor.

ROCHESTER PIN-UP GALLERY

This is an archive of the exhibitions shown in the Rochester Pin-Up Gallery. The gallery is no longer holding exhibitions, as it now holds our HP Indigo 3050 for our book production.

The Rochester Pin-Up Gallery was conceived in order to help develop the ever-expanding artist community in the Upstate New York area. The Rochester Pin-Up Gallery houses monthly exhibitions by Upstate artists, and once monthly transforms into an open meeting and critique space for artists in and around Rochester.

GALLERY KUNSTLER

The gallery is now our wide-format printing area housing all of our printers.

Harkening back to Gutenberg and the roots of modern printing in Germany, Gallery Kuntsler takes its name from the German for ‘artist,’ proudly displaying the passage of printing into the fine arts. Gallery Kunstler is the larger gallery space in Booksmart Studio at 1450 square feet and 180 linear feet of wall space. Gallery Kunstler houses exhibitions by international, national, and local artists, as well as juried and curated shows. Please take a look at our galleries of past and present exhibitions to see examples of the work shown in Gallery Kunstler.

IMAGING PANELS

The Imaging Panels of Rochester, NY are panels to display 2D artwork as a public exterior gallery. The Imaging Panels are located on the artWALK extension in the Neighborhood of the Arts in Rochester. We are the proud sponsors and proposed the idea at public forums held in Rochester. We have annual calls for artwork at the website dedicated to the Imaging Panels. The jury consist of artist & educators based in Rochester, NY and the call for entries is limited to Upstate New York artists & photographers.

So how do we know what pages to include in a book?

Are you struggling to figure out where your copyright information should be placed in your book? If you answered yes, then this guide is for you. We will provide you with advice for including pages in your book and their traditional placement within a book at the time of printing your book.

Booksmart Studio has created a starter guide that will help you to determine where critical pages of your book should be placed within your covers. These guidelines follow the Chicago style guide for books and their pages, which serves as a guide for publishers and book artists.

COLOR MANAGEMENT 101

© Michael Dear

Michael Dear, the Facilities Manager for the College of Imaging Arts & Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology has provided a color management tutorial for Booksmart Studio, which compliments his color management workshops. The tutorial is a hands-on approach to explaining an ICC color workflow and how to better manage the colors you are seeing from your monitor to your prints. Please feel free to give Michael any feedback through his survey on the tutorial.

How do I layout my Innova Art Opus?

This tutorial will walk you through the steps for creating your custom Innova Opus Album.

The following templates will be needed as starting points in either Adobe Photoshop™ or Adobe Photoshop Elements™. You will need to resize the templates in either application to a resolution of either 300 or 360 before you start the layout.

How do I package my InDesign file?

In order to send your files efficiently and completely you must package your files. If you are working in InDesign you will need to make sure that your image files are properly linked before you start, then go to File > Package. This will put all of your images, fonts and InDesign file in the same folder. You will then want to Zip or Stuff the folder to compress it for quicker delivery. If you are unsure of how to check that your image files are properly linked, simply go to View > Links and then you will see the window for your links. If anything has a red circle with a questions mark or yellow triangle with an exclamation point. You MUST address these issues before you package your file. Otherwise, those files will not be included in the final package. Therefore, slowing down your production schedule!

If you are working in Photoshop it is best to have all of the images (TIFF or PSD) in one folder. DO NOT compose text in Photoshop, as this program does not render text properly when printing to inkjet printers. You will then need to Zip or Stuff the folder for quickest delivery.

Tips & Recommendations- Libro

Tips & Recommendations

General Recommendations

Book cloth Choices: If you are unsure of the book cloth you wish to work with or the color be sure to order the sample swatches we offer on librocollection.com. This will ensure you are not disappointed with your final Libro.

Order Extra Paper: If you order extra paper at the same time as your Libro we do not charge our normal fee for drilling and scoring the paper. If you buy at a later date we charge $15 for each as a service fee.

When printing your portfolio at Booksmart Studio!

Color Space: All photographs, illustrations, and the InDesign file should be in either Adobe RGB or (CMYK SWOP Coated) Color Space. If you are not sure how to set your color space in Photoshop or InDesign then simply go to Adobe’s website for more information. This can be set in both Photoshop and InDesign by going to Edit/Color Space in your application. There you must set a color space for RGB & CMYK.

Packaging Files: Once you are done designing your book/Libro you should make sure all files are linked. Once you make sure files are linked go to File/Package in InDesign. This will create a folder for you that contains your InDesign file, links, fonts, and instructions. This will ensure proper printing of your files as we will have all materials/files required. However, you must make sure that all files are linked.

Resolution: All Images should be at the size they are in the Book/Libro at 300ppi

File Format: All images should be either TIFF or PSD files. Remember the more you work on a JPEG and save it the more your image is degraded. InDesign Templates provided: We have provided 11”x 14” or 11”x 17” InDesign templates for you to use. A-Master pages are pages designed to simply show you where the spine will be placed on your pages. In that area you will not want to place an image area unless you are trying to ensure you do not see white between pages. B-Master pages are set up so you know how mush bleed to use for pages that bleed on the edges or simply across the gutter.

Custom Magnesium Die: Your file for your magnesium die should be at the dimension/size you are going to have stamped/debossed on the cover. The file should be at 300ppi and be a grayscale TIFF file with only black & white (no grays.) The black is what will be debossed into the cover.

Stamping Placement on the cover: Create a sized template file for your book size (A4, 11”x14”, 11”x17”, 12”x12”, 13”x19”, or your custom size) as grayscale file at 300ppi and then place the file you created for your custom die on the correctly sized template file to illustrate where you would like it positioned. Save this file as a JPEG with a quality of 2 to create a small file and email it with your Custom Magnesium Die file. If you are getting an exposed post Libro please remember the 1” spine on the left for a visual centering effect. Why a grayscale file? To save on file size when transmuting the file to Booksmart Studio.

Bleeds: Make sure you follow our templates for any bleeds to ensure that everything lines up properly or is trimmed to be a complete bleed.

Pocket inside back cover: If you wish to have a pocket on the inside for your resume, please make sure that you indicate so when ordering and choose a Hahnemuhle Bugra paper to be used for the pocket.
