1st Annual Alternative Process Digital Printing Exhibition

Booksmart Studio embraces the new digital printing technologies while  holding on the old values of traditional craftsmanship, printmaking, photography, and the studio arts. The studio prides itself on blending these old values with new technology to create works that encompass both state-of-the-art printing and classic hands-on personalization. This upcoming exhibition will celebrate the combination of new technology with an enduring emphasis on fine craftsmanship and quality.

The exhibition, recognizing and celebrating innovation and talent in digital printing, will be juried by Mary Taylor- educator and award-winning vanguard of digital processes. Using an eclectic mix of found objects, handmade papers, hand coatings, and modern digital printing processes, Taylor creates fine monoprints, artist books, and mixed media digital prints. While not teaching digital printmaking workshops or managing the studio of Digital Atelier’s Dorothy Krause, Mary Taylor is advancing her own unique talent and pioneering the art of alternative digital printing processes.

Circulation- Call for Entries

Call For Entries Artists of All Mediums: Circulation

The strength and value in art is located not solely in its visuality, but also in its ability to circulate as an object, or at the most basic level- its grounds in a circulating idea.

Within a tiny droplet of blood, there are some 5 million red blood cells. It takes about 20 seconds for each of these red blood cells to circle the whole body. These red blood cells will each make approximately 250,000 round trips of the body before being replaced by another red blood cell.

USA Today has a daily circulation of 2,528,437. In one year, that amounts to 922,879,505 reads.

By the end of the Civil War, between one-third and one-half of all U.S. paper currency in circulation was counterfeit.

The ice age cycles were influenced by changes in ocean circulation arising from changes in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

Booksmart Studio is seeking submission of artist works that confront, explore, exploit, challenge, and investigate the modes, methods, and effects of circulation. Keeping in line with the diverse modes of circulation and dissemination, the exhibition is open to all mediums.
The deadline for entry is March 28, 2008.

Booksmart Studio: Employee Artwork – Kory Gunnarsen

Booksmart Studio’s digital printing lab manager Kory Gunnarsen is recognized by most Rochester artists and photographers from his days running the digital lab at Lumiere Photo. Kory is a graduate from RIT where he received a BFA in Professional Photographic Illustration with a concentration in Visual Media. The concentration in Visual Media sparked Kory’s love for digital workflow and just about anything to do with digital printing. You may walk into Booksmart Studio and find Kory under the hood of the Epson or Canon machines pushing them beyond their limitations.

The panoramic photography below was displayed in the employee artwork gallery show, “Who Is Booksmart Studio?”  This show  the gallery when Booksmart Studio first opened.  It was printed on Canon inkjet printers on Innova Ultrasmooth Gloss and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl.  The other exhibitors were Melissa Olen, Andy Super, and Joe Ziolkowski.

Booksmart Fine Art Metal available at inkAID & Shades of Paper

The Booksmart Fine Art Metal series is now available from either inkAID or Shades of Paper, as the popularity continues to grow. Both retailers will have all five surfaces available along with every size we have cut.

The inkAID product can be used in conjunction with the Fine Art Metal series to create images with multiple layers. This can be done by first printing on the metal then using inkAID to coat on top of the printed piece and finally print again on top of the inkAID surface. This is why we have teamed up with inkAID to offer their material to artists and photographers while they also distribute our metal series. The creative options are limitless!

The Fine-Edition Book with Eric Kunsman of Booksmart Studio™ Photokina 2006

One of the most important aspects of the digital photography revolution was the ability to create books of your own images without the need for a publisher, or even the need to have a press run. In this interview with Eric Kunsman of Booksmart Studio, we discuss the rise of the fine-edition book. In the past, an artist didn’t have too many choices if they wanted a book of their work, but with the advent of digital imaging technology, everyone from photographers to scrapbookers are creating their own books, and in the fine-art realm fine-edition books are allowing artists new ways to reach their collectors, and audience.

Recorded at the Photokina Conference in Köln, Germany, in October 2006 by Harris Fogel. Posted 11/26/06 (11:07)
